Manufactured home insurance is insurance for mobile and manufactured homes. It provides financial protection in the event that your home is damaged and personal belongings destroyed. It also offers liability coverage and covers other outside structures on the land you own such as a shed, fence or detached garage.
Coverage is provided for a wide range of perils including but not limited to, fire, hail, lightning, wind, theft, vandalism, and falling objects. It’s considered an equivalent of a standard homeowner’s policy for owners of manufactured homes.
Despite all the similarities that exist between these insurance policies, they still have some major differences. Mobile homes have a different design and build when compared to standard homes, hence will require a special insurance policy that assumes the added risks.
Events like fire, wind, broken pipes or theft all pose a bigger threat to a manufactured home. Considering mobile homes present a unique set of risks, the coverages that matter to a mobile homeowner need to be protected with the right coverages. Because of this, a few policy details set mobile home policies apart from other homeowner’s insurance policies. For instance, mobile home insurance offers special optional coverage that offers protection for a diverse number of situations.
Most insurance companies consider mobile homes as being a greater risk to insure since they carry such distinct risks. This explains why mobile home insurance tends to be somewhat higher. Additionally, mobile homeowners can tailor insurance for the purpose which they will be using the mobile home for, whether as a full-time residence, seasonal home, vacation home or rental home.
Anyone is eligible to get a manufactured home insurance policy as long as the dwelling in question falls under the manufactured home definition:
“Manufactured homes” are homes built entirely in the factory under a federal building code administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Federal Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards (commonly known as the HUD Code) went into effect July 15, 1976.
If you have questions about your dwelling and if it qualifies for mobile home insurance, I would be happy to take a look and tell you what kind of coverage you need. Please contact me to set up an appointment.
